How much paint do I need to paint a full body kit?

I'm looking for something decent (I don't care if it's perfect) to scratch me the 300$ a paint shop wants to do it. How much paint do I need? Where is a cheap place to buy paint to do my full body kit? It's for a full body kit for 1998 chevrolet malibu. Also, what's wrong with laying a body kit flat before painting it? What should I prime it with? It's fiberglassHow much paint do I need to paint a full body kit?
have the paint shop do it you'll spend 300 bucks on the material to do it right. You need primer paint clear sandpaper tack rag compressor spray gun and then if you mess something up you get to do it all again

CHILL OUT DUDE!!!! I been doin this crap for over 20 years. It's not cheap and it's not easy that's why there's a billion dollar bussiness based on it.Now go to discount get your spray cans and screw up your car.I'll be lookin for the question ';How do I strip paint off a fiberglass body kit?';How much paint do I need to paint a full body kit?
$300 is cheap if that is all a shop wants. If you never have painted, I'd take that deal and run, as just the supplies alone at your cost (retail) are gonna cost you near this amount.

Cost depends on color, black is cheap, reds are expensive, others are in between. If you are talking a body kit that just wraps around the bottom of the car, without seeing it, I would guess 1 quart of paint, as you do dilute it 50:50 with reducer.

So here is your supply list:

$75 quart of paint (price can range here)

$15 gallon of reducer

$10 quart of wax and grease remover

$10 600 grit sand paper, gray scuff pads

$30 quart of talc-fillable primer (red if red paint, gray for rest)

$15 gallon of lacquer thinner

$1 tack rag

$?? spray bottle of water

$?? air compressor

$?? mini or normal HVLP spray gun, .8-.10 mm tip

$?? inline water filter

$?? inline oil seperator

$?? regulator

$?? high speed buffer

$?? foam pad for buffer

$?? 3M finesse it compound

$25 paint mask, respirator

$25 quart of clear coat

$15 pint of hardener

$15 pint of flex additive

$15 fish eye remover

$20 green paint paper

$10 green masking tape

(?? = you better have already or you are over $1000 in price)

maybe a few tiny odds and ends left, but just right now, you are at $422 retail price and you have yet to spray them or do any work.

they are best to be sprayed on the car so they are not twisted when being installed which will risk damaging, spider webbing or popping the paint. install, mask/paper off, prep, sand, prep, paint, clear, sand, buff.

ps - I charge $300 for just a bumper cover repaint, no major damage. if you brought me a body kit, I'd start at $900 and then go up if I am doing install and all.

pps - you want to sand/scuff the body kit when new as that coating is a seal coat. paint/primer will not adhere to it. you have to scuff it first or at least wax and grease it to get bite. then do few layers of primer, wet sand, dry/clean, paint, dry, clear, clear, dry, sand, buff
Actually $300 IS not bad if they are supplying the paint and everything. If your car is a factory color the Paint alone will probably be close to $150, thats not counting the clearcoat, reducers, hardners, and other supplies. Plus with a body shop, they will get everything to line up correctly. Even if you bought your own paint, and did the work yourself, you would only be saving $50-$100. Most body shops wont even paint a front bumper for $300. If you would like to check call a local paint shop and get your paint code from inside your driver side door. You will need AT LEAST1 quart sandable primer, 1 quart activator for primer, 1 quart paint, 1 quart activator, 1 quart clearcoat, 1 pint hardner (varies on manufacturer), 1 gallon lacquer thinner, a gallon of reducer, measuring cups, access to a HVLP paintgun, a clean room, a good air compressor, and LOTS of sandpaper and prep time. You will need to spend probably 8-10 hours sanding and prep work to get it as straight as the shop.
