There are many variables to consider.


Is your vehicle paintable? Does it have rust spots or damage that needs to be repaired prior to painting? If so, maybe you can do this yourself and that will save you some money.


If the current paint is in bad shape, you may need to sand it down before repainting, this again is something you could possibly do yourself to save some money.


Also, depending on how much time and ability you have, if you fix any bad places, do any sanding, and primer the vehicle yourself, you can really save some money.


If you simply want to take the vehicle somewhere and let them do everything, you still have some things you can do in order to save money. First off, you should be aware that some paints are cheaper then others. Going with a basic one color is fairly inexpensive, compared to exotic or flaked metalic etc. Also, after the paint is applied a clear coat is put over the paint. Expensive paint jobs will usually have multiple layers of clear coat, this is what gives the paint job that deep rich apperance. You can save money by limiting the number of clear coats applied.


One other thing, negotiate with your painter. If he has a color he needs to get rid of, or is shooting a vehicle and can just run yours in with it and do them both without having to clean and set up again, then he may cut you a really good deal. The other thing is too be flexible.


Let the painter work you in when it is convenient for him, when it fits his schedule etc. This will also give you a good vantage point to negociate a good deal.


If you really just want a cheap paint job, there are a few Major Paint companies out their that do professional work for a really reasonable price, and they run specials all of the time. It really depends on where you go and what kind of paint you get - good factory-quality paint is much more expensive than cheap body shop paint, and the price will vary based on what color you want, how many clearcoats you want, if it needs any preparation body work first or if there's rust on the body, and it will cost even more if you get fancy paint with metallic flakes or two-tone colors or anything fancy like that.


I'd say, for a factory-quality paint job, in a common color without anything special added, you're looking at $2000-3500.





However, if you just want a cheap paint job that looks okay without any major body work, you should go to Maaco or Earl Shieb paint shops, they're everywhere and you're only going to pay probably about $700 or so - I got my car painted there and I was very happy with how it turned out
